MagicJack versus Skype: What’s the Difference?

MagicJack and Skype are two very popular VoIP providers that you can use to call any landline or cell phone. However, they do have some very distinct differences. Let’s take a look at the two VoIP providers and see which is best for you.

MagicJack is a small device that plugs into your computer and your home phone. MagicJack then allows you to call as many people as often as you want, anywhere in the USA and Canada, for a flat monthly rate. In order to use MagicJack, you must have a high speed Internet connection and the MagicJack device, which you can purchase online or at Radio Shack. (Para aprender de MagicJack en Español, cliquea aqui.)

Skype is a downloaded computer program that allows you to call other Skype users, landlines, and cell phones in more than 30 countries around the world. There is no charge to call other Skype users; the rate per minute varies depending which country you are calling. Skype does not require any additional equipment and can be downloaded on computers and smartphones.

So which one is best for you?

If you don’t mind using an extra piece of technology to make your phone calls and like having one flat fee each month, then MagicJack might be for you. However, MagicJack is only able to call numbers in the USA and Canada, so if you want to call someone in any other country, you are out of luck. You also have to buy the MagicJack device, which creates an initial out-of-pocket expense.

If you want to just open your computer or turn on your smartphone and be able to make calls, then Skype might be the best for you. You can also call numbers in more than 30 countries, such as the UK or China. However, Skype charges per minute and the rates vary by country, so you cannot plan on paying a certain amount each month; this could result in unexpected expenses.

Both VoIP providers are very good providers and make it easy to call whomever you want.
