DAVE:  Generally satisfied, but starting to find restrictions in calling some area codes & specific no.s As phone co.s get wise they restrict in-coming 'free' calls. You will get messages that you must prepay to call such no.s or various free conf. call access lines. So, you can't just call anywhere in the 50 states...thus, their advertising is somewhat misleading & false....but very cheap and useable overall.

NA:  You people complaining, and saying you wish you could get your money back are STUPID. All you have to do is CALL YOUR CREDIT CARD COMPANY and request a Chargeback. In other words DISPUTE THE CHARGE, and you will see you money refunded. You never got the service promised. You never got the MJ. You cannot contact the company, or tried and no response. You returned the item, and still have not gotten a refund. All valid reasons. NOW, for the fools saying how they cannot renew over and over... idiots! The is a company tactic. A few reasons. One, it forces you to spend again buying another MJ. Two, prices plans could be changing and thus you are forced to honor new terms.

I can't understand how anyone can say "nay" to this product...Oh, and also, for hose who complain about being able to contact help only through chat, ome on fellas? that's the way most people communicate now, in fact, this IS a computer compatible product, get with it!

wesley:  Followup to my last comment, is that 20 dollars a year does not help save when you lose hundreds a year because of them not taking 20 minutes to add a single area code to accommodate an entire state for their customers their. So I contacted the state of New Mexico and the FCC...Soon enough because of the obvious ignoring of the situation by MJ, they will begin to be fined like $10000 per day if they do not comply to the new area code in New Mexico...they have already had 5+ years to make the simple change so as far as the state and fcc are concerned it is obvious negligence or lack of caring on their part, hence the fines...Maybe the hit in the pocket book will get them off their butts!

wesley:  My comment is directed at Lucky and is stupid post about those of us complaining about magic jack being silly. I agree, it would be silly to complain about a cheap phone alternative. However, mj is not all rosey. Lucky are you a user of mj from a larger state or market? If so then you comment is absurd. I am in New Mexico, and while I have nothing against a very well priced phone service such as this, they should promote it as a cheap half/assed alternative that only works 50% or less of the time for those of us in smaller market states that they apparently see no benefit to them to provide any kind of decent support. See I have mj and my one huge complaint is the fact that they do not provide basic support to states like New Mexico. If the advertised that they are cheap and will only provide true support to larger states and markets I would not have a problem. In my case and every customer in New Mexico, we get basically a 50% dropped call rate because mj has not gotten off of the asses and made one simple change to their area codes to update the state of New Mexico with proper area code options for our phone numbers. The kicker is that New Mexico only has 2 area codes. 8 years ago we had only 1 area code for the whole state. That changed 8 years ago and now we have 2. 505 and 575 with 505 being the original area code. 8 YEars ago the state was split into 2 zones with 20% of the state retaining the 505 area code and the other 80% of the state getting and new 575 area code. Those of us that need the 575 area code are stuck with the 505 area code which basically causes, dropped calls, invalid calls, lost business, inconvenience for customers, family and friends having to remember to use 505 even though it is any invalid area code which in turn causes dropped calls all the time and 50% of the time not even getting a dial tone to make a damn phone call. Is this worth 20 bucks a years...well if you do any business on your phone then absolutely not since you lose money by not being able to provide accurate phone service to customers or recruit new customers. This is a change that mj can make in 20 minutes, however, I figure that since New Mexico is a smaller market for them they do not see it as the least bit important to take the 20 minutes needed to simply add 1 single area code for the state of new mexico to alleviate this problems for New Mexico customers. Texas, for example had some area code changes just a couple years back, with a 2 year transition period where many area codes in the state affected would be active along side the new area codes the state put in place, a phase out period if you will. MJ (aka magic jack) jumped right on this and within 3 weeks of Texas making announcement of new codes going into affect they added them for their Texas customers. In New Mexico this happened on a smaller scale, only 1 new area code, with same transitional period ending in 2009, and 575 actually being added in 2007. Guess what...it is 5 years later and the 575 code is still not added for us in New Mexico and are stuck using 505 still which is an invalid area code for 80% of us!!! THis is not only illegal but it is also insulting that they just don't give a damn because we are a small state/market. I am sure other states with smaller markets are seeing the same treatment.

ESR:  My mother lives in another state, and so she bought each of us one of these MJ units. Since my PC is on 95% of the time, and she has hers on most of the week, the $20.00 a year saves us heaps in long distance calling since we talk to one another most days twice for over an hour each time. On the weekends she calls me on my regular line with her cell and costs her zero. We have little problems with connectivity and when we have had troubles the assistance we get is quick and easy over the phone or chat. We have had our MJ since they first came out. We love them. Would love to try the new magicjack plus but neither of us can really afford them.

Seaduced:  We have 2 MJs, one at work that runs a credit card box and now a MJ+ at home. I have had little to no problems. etting rid of the extension cable help with data and voice. The MJ+ too 4 minutes to setup, we picked a number that cost $3 more a year (but easy to remember) We contacted support through their chat option, took about 8-9 minutes to get someone, and they were helpful. We suggest you do not call in... use their chat option. We are 98@ happy with the overall MJ usage. We were paying about $50 to have a phone with Brighthouse... you do the math. Oh, at the office, we have the slowest connection that Brighthouse offers and the thing works fine. Th MJ + is worth the few extra bucks.

Mike:  Avoid, avoid, avoid, Like several others said they charge your card immediately, not 30 days as promised. Then if they have no numbers, they may suggest a non-local number at no charge. Guess what they charged. Then when they get numbers, they want $10.00 for the number and $10.00 for the number they promised in the first place. Customer service is beyond horrible, they totally do not give a damn. The solution to your problem always seems to be pull out your credit card and once they get that, plan on extra charges. Calls are ok, but not great. SCAM

The operator that handled my call could not verify my name that I have a contract bought and paid for through radio shack for a five (5) yr service plan. They apparently do not keep good records as I have kept the receipt paid at the radio shack and gave them my credit card for payment, and also have that record. Radio Shack also could not verify that i purchased the magic jack from them;hard to believe but true. It all comes down to saving labor cost using foreign help that cannot understand our english rhetoric/ in reading our writing proficiently and their record keeping is very questionable. if I could get my money back, I would in a heart beat. Try getting to talk to someone on the phone is impossible! If one could speak with them in a live conversation, it would resolve a problem more expediantly! So buyer beware! THE Question is; does the right hand know what left hand is doing ?????? Hire people that speak and understand ENGLISH real well and then we can converse rather than typing back and forth communication that is so inefficient and a waste of time. The other poblem is when you shutdown your computer and startup again it takes forever and a day with a pop up interference note magic jack provides.

As long as you have a fairly new computer & fast internet speed, it should work fine. This probably won't work on an old computer you bought 10 yrs. ago, so don't even try it. I don't have dropped calls or any problems making or receiving calls. Read the suggestions here & give it a try.

K6:  oh, i forgot to mention, but the magic jack does NOT need that little USB phone jack thing. it works the same as EVERY other VIOP service, allowing you to use any headset, or your speakers and a desktop mic, or hell even a stage mic and guitar amplifier if you have it hooked up that way. some area codes dont show up in their proper place, and you may have to search around for yours. also, to the people who ended up having a "long distance" number, and didnt realize until people were calling and paying for it, you and your "customers" should have noticed that it was out of area code. but due to the atrocious spelling and partial engrish, its obvious that your comment is not from a real person, or not from a real concerned business owner anyways. illiterate people like that dont succeed in the real world. NOTE THE FOLLOWING. you will have to SPECIFICALLY set up 911 calling if you want it. or you can just hold onto an old cell phone for that purpose, since they all retain their ability to dial 911 regardless of whether or not you have service. thank you very much FCC.

K6:  magic jack works perfectly, BUT you have to actually have a decent computer. magic jack works on something called VIOP or Voice Over Internet Protocol. for magic jack to work well, you have to have decent internet speed first off, and using other web services WILL draw bandwidth, and screw up call quality. the next part is your computer itself. if you have some outdated POS then do NOT buy this. anything less then a 2.0Ghz Pentium 4, and less then 1Gb of ram, and your computer is FAR to outdated to use this. the majority of "comments" on this page are spam, and nothing more so just ignore all that bullshit. my email is attached, if you feel the need to ask a real person, send an email and whenever the hell i check it, ill let you know just how PERFECT this device works. just stay off the damn computer while you are using it.

That is still a long distance call to that prefix even if you are right next door. Don't want my friends to pay long distance just to call me from across town. BUT, when I move somewhere that this will be useful (large metropolitan area that has many locations available) then I will get it. Oh well, good thing it was a free trial.

Mary:  We have a business line our land line is costing us a lot of money. Magic jack costs about $20 a year, but here is the SCAM!!!! YES SCAM! My grandmom calls us every night so we know that she made it safe upstairs, even though she lives NEXT DOOR, yes next door the same area code, but after she looked at this months phone bill she is being charged a long distance PAID Call everytime she calls our new Magic Jack number. We have given everyone out our new magic jack number & because it is a business line the number has been changed in the yellow pages, so even if we decide to keep our old number and call them and ask them not to cancel the old number the begging of the month we will lose business because we are not keeping magic jack. SO if you are asking yourself why is magic jack so cheap the answer is that if your CUSTOMES, FAMILY & FRIENDS are calling your magic jack number they are paying the bill. They our paying long distant everytime they call you even if they live next door in your area code! Don't fall for the magic jack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Earl:  I think the device is not really bad but i would not recommend it as a replacement for a normal phone. It's nice that you can connect a normal phone to it, but keep in mind you need a computer anyways and you need to have your computer turned on 24/7 to be called or calls simply go to your mailbox. If you plan to run your computer 24/7 maybe look for one with low power consumption or the electricity bill will eat up what you save on the phone bill. In the end i keep my "normal" phone line as it's more convenient and having better sound quality. If you're much into VOIP for long distance or additional calls and the person you call got a computer as well i suggest you look into Skype which is free and just requires a 5 Dollar computer headset or microphone. Skype at least runs on nearly every platform (Even on PSP!) and besides a microphone does not need additional gimmickery. Use of a "Normal" telephone might seem "easier" but imho keeping your normal phone seperated from the computer saves you much trouble and energy cost. Try calculating a bit before you cancel your normal phone line.

Everyone has some kinks to work out when new, and competition in this market is fierce. Voice over IP has been on it's way for some time-hopefully this will help to drop other carriers rates. Actually costs less for companies to send calls this way-can send more information-better call quality. thanks MJ :) Hooray for the Underdog!!!! It's been some time since I've seen one. MLE:  What I've learned in 3 years of Magic Jack use: 1) The power of your computer must be set at "High Performance" Level. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Performance Level > Choose High Performance. 2) If you have a lot of other programs taking juice from your computer, consider getting a good quality independent usb hub to use with MJ. Plug the hub into the wall. 3) Turn off all firewalls during installation. 4) Do not have more than one firewall active on your computer at one time. Your computer will have glitches not only with MJ, but with other programs as well due to the firewalls was conflicting with each other. 5) Make sure that you configure your firewall so that MJ is allowed to go through. Put MJ on your exception list in your firewall program. 5) MJ breaks up with cell phones users, just as regular phones have problems. 6) Local phone number exchanges - 3 numbers after your area code - are assigned to the signal tower which is nearest to your location. 7) Your computer does not have to be on 24/7 in order to receive calls. You can still receive messages when your computer is turned off, but you will not be able to hear the ring when the computer is off. Thankfully, you can go to your email to open your messages there, if for some reason, your phone doesn't record all of your messages. 8) Be as kind as you can to the techs. They are just trying to make a living (from India or the Phillipines or wherever). It's not their fault that MJ service has been outsourced. Also, if you chat with them multiple times, ask them to check previous chats for info and tell them what steps have already been done. That way they will hook you up faster to a supervisor. 9) Check for computer conflicts. I have PC Health Advisor which checks for the things that can slow your computer down, clog up the works, and prevent enough juice from going to your magic jack as well as other programs. 10) Try adjusting the volume on your MJ softphone, through the Help menu > Volume/Headset Control Panel. Make sure the setting is on "telephone". I am finding the best audio quality when the levels are set at mid-way or less. At least on my end, I don't have as much echo. I don't know how the reception is on the other end yet.Anyway, try different level volumes on your mj softphone. ***** I've also gone the route of 15 hours for one issue with Magic Jack techs. I empathize with the mj vets! I have a 5 year contract, up in 2013. Whatever you do, try to stay away from getting into the deep, deep, system fixes as it generally complicates things even more. If you have to go there, then there is something else, other than Magic Jack that needs to be addressed. Maybe a virus or a worm, whatever. If you are very frustrated with mj, cut to the chase and ask for a replacement. It will cost you around $10.80 for shipping and handling. Don't make yourself crazy! ************** I still have one glitch - When I access my voicemail by the voicemail button, I get a busy signal or ringing on top of my outgoing message. I'm still a little iffy on the audio quality, but it is 95% good, with my replacement MJ. That's it for now.

I have bought over 30 units in the past 3 years and have dealt with all of the stupid issue of not being allowed to own more than 2 units per email account. Why? The concept is great; the service by nonexistent customer service is more trouble than the money it saves. first you have to go through an on line experience to resolve any issues. Then I found a number to get into customer service since they had billed a credit card without notice. After 23 minutes on wait I explained to the agent who answered that I had no way of discerning which jack my cc had paid as there was no reference on the charge made. She said that they automatically bill at the end of each year. I asked to have a supervisors call me back and was told that they do not make outgoing calls. I told her that I would be cancelling my services and she said still no one would be calling me back. She was more than rude. This a service industry, where’s the service? We will start moving to some other platform.

As for people complaining about not compatible with a Linux OS - I say if you can afford Linux, you should NOT need to try to save $$$ & have a MagicJack - just utilize a normal Landline Phone & get a good Nationwide Call Plan.

nobodyathome:  You people trying to get help from tech support... All tech support people - yes, they're people, doing their job - can do is eliminate possible causes of the problem. Do you realize how many factors (variables) are involved for this to phone system to work? The computer hardware, the operating system, the device drivers, the sound card, the headset, the telephone, the internet connection, the network cable from your modem to the computer, the power/phone lines your house is connected to. It's the tech support person's job to eliminate the other variables (more likely at fault) before assuming the device is defective - especially if the device is working in most other cases. If you don't think the support person is helping you, and you're so sure it's a defective device, and your time is worth ANYTHING, why don't you order another device with the risk-free trial? If the second one works, send the first one back and cancel the trial offer. If it doesn't work, chances are it's your computer or one of the other dozens of variables. (Frankly, if the people running MagicJack had any business sense, they should authorize an exchange instead of tying up their support agents for 13 hours on one customer. They could ship out a new device OVERNIGHT for cheaper than what the support time is costing!) Support recommends you find another computer to test the device on to eliminate (or determine) your computer as the problem. How long will it take you to go to a friend's house and try installing it? Certainly less than the 13 hours with tech support (as one person claims below), which is hardly worth trying to get a $40 device to work! My time is worth more than $3 an hour!!!!! And if you're trying to use a cheap solution like this to operate a business that depends on communicating by phone with your customers - you need to go back to business school and learn the basics. No, I don't work for, sell, or even own a MagicJack (just got here while researching it). I am a computer support technician.

Now it's become a probem, and when I contacted them to correct the problem, they insisted it was my fault and that I had picked the wrong area code from a list. There is now way I would have done that. At that time I was not offered a list. I just gave them my address and they assigned the area code. They want to charge me $10 to correct it. When I argured that I shouldn't have to pay for their mistake, they remained adamant. I will not do this, so I'm scrapping my MagicJack.

I've lost and have found my cell phone several times now, because I had the Magic Jack to use to call my cell, and then hunt-down the ringer. I call long distance during peak periods for my cell plan, I use the phone number from Magic Jack if I have to provide a number when registering with something that I KNOW will spam me with a telemarketing call...like CREDIT CARDS or BANKS..which can and DO, legally, due to the clause in the telemarketing law. For the price of $39..for the jack and a year of service...I have NO complaints. I used to have Packet8. I paid $24 a month for unlimited. My family would NOT use the phone because of all the glitches. Magic Jack is light years ahead, yet is not perfect. It's only HECK'a inexpensive and a good deal, in my humble estimation. I can't complain for less than $2 a month. I drop more than that in the couch every month.

Taken4Ride by MJ:  Got sucked in as well since the experience with Magicjack for 1st 30 day free trial seemed OK. When not able to get a number assignment having an area code w/i my state shouId have been the 1st clue of a disaster, $40 down the toilet. I waited 2 more months B4 canceling my traditional quality landline service. Boy was I wrong since the incoming call capabilities became sparodic as was call quality with drops and frequent choppy signal. Messages given to my important callers, e.g., “improper call routing”, “number unavailable“,even “number not in service” responses are totally unacceptable. Their customer service sucks, available only through lengthy chats, wherein they continually claim that problems are not on their end, with no resolution ever in sight. It's obvious that investment stopped with their fabricating an adapter to your PC, as they have not invested in purchasing or leasing network circuits that legitimate carriers do. B4 you buy, look at the warranty clause. The “one minute of patience for a lifetime of savings” has now run the gamut in this household. If you're still open for a scam, want to burn your $40 and also be taken for a ride, just send the $40 to me.

NNS:  Both Vonage and Magic Jack are wonderful products. Vonage has full blown telephone support and many features that Magic Jack doesn't. However if you just want to make almost free long distance phone call then Magic Jack would be the way to go since Vonage costs a considerable amount of money per month. You can't expect for $20 a month to get a live person to talk to or lots of extra features. Recently I did have to use the chat support and they were quite able to fix my problem. I have been using Magic Jack for over 2 years. I use it for work to talk with customers and to have phone meetings. It rarely has an issue and ususally if it does it's because of my computer or my internet provider. The only complaint I have with MJ is that it has to have a computer running to use the phone. I have used it connected to a computer that was either wireless or hardwired and it worked great either way. But I do have a good DSL connection and router. And no, I don't work for MJ or have any connection to anyone who does. I'm just very please with the service that they provide for $20 a year.

Ripped off!:  We have had Magic Jack for 2 years. Shortly before our first year ended we started having numbers that wouldn't connect. Not realizing what was going on being given th inpression that it was a problem with the other companies we renewed for five years as we can't afford a phone with other companies. Shortly after we renewed we started have troubles connecting with more & more numbers. With in the last 4 months we have lost the ablity to connect with many numbers we had been connecting with before. All year since we renewed we've been getting the run around. Then we started getting recordings indicating that other companies weren't meeting with their requests to connect. Finally last week after making several calls in a two week period I talked to an "agent " who said he would get it corrected & I would get an email explaining what was going on & the correction. The email basically said that they didn't want to pay the connection fees the other companies were asking. So, they weren't going to honor their contract with us. And, if we didn't like it we could return the unit & cancel our contract for a $20.00 refund. We paid $40.00 for the unit,& $70.00 for the five year contract which started this fall. This thing is just a con, they are deceptive & alot of their "agents" are rude. I don't know if the inventor intended his creation to rip off people or not but that is what is happening. The FCC should look into this company & do something about their false advertising & breech of contract. WHAT EVER YOU DO DON'T BUY INTO TO THIS FRAUD!

I received it here in the USA and quickly configured it for my area code. Then I sent it to my wife in Asia. She calls me from it to my phone here and we talk free for hours throughout the day and night. The only interruptions we've experienced was when a Microsoft patch was applied that closed the port the MJ was using. But their tech line always got back to me with the solution to get us back working. That's a 10,000+ mile phone call for about $20 a year. I can't see how anyone complain about this product.

The second and most worrying issued is that whenever they want they put you account under review, without giving you any reason. To refute payment is suppose to be the 1 reason but many acccounts are under review without refuting anything. I better stop reselling MJ, they won´t even let you change your number while under forever review.

Andrea:  I have had magicjack for 2 years and have had to work around various "issues". However, all in all, it is a wonderful device and is very affordable. A few words of advice...1. do not plug a long phone cord into the magicjack...it works best with a short cord for some reason. 2. It works better with a hard-wired phone, rather than a wireless phone if your computer is connected to the internet via WiFi. If you are connected directly, it is not an issue...and neither is the long phone cord issue. 3. For some reason, sometimes, the phone and the magicjack lose their connection (they stop talking to each other) and you need to unplug and plug it back in. All in all, its wonderful and I was paying over $40 a month for basically the same services. As they say, a moment of patience for a lifetime of savings.

It can be frustrating but it can save you money when your in a foreign country calling home.If they can fix the bugs it would be wonderful and even with the bugs its better than long distance phone calls the standard way.

It works out to about $1.53/month over the 6 years. I was able to send a fax. Calls drop sometimes. Quality is good. I'm happy for the cost. I have dry dsl at home. My home wiring is not on plugged into local phone service. So I plugged MagicJack right into a wall outlet and have a dial tone throughout the house. The software and website that drives this product is terrible. The idea and cost are great. If they improved the software, it'd be a stellar product.

After that, it's $20 a year OR you can buy multiple years and pay even less. (5 years = $70 which means $14/year) Family is spread all over the country and includes several military families. They have a US number and I call them in Germany, Japan and the Phillipines and we don't pay extra for it. If you want to call international numbers (MagicJack or not) you can do so for about 5 cents a minute. Your computer must be on in order to get/make calls. However, if you miss a call and they leave a message, MJ sends you an email with the voicemail attached as a wav file. I will NEVER go back to a land line!

The technician obviously knows more about what makes the product work than you do, so you need to cooperate with what he tells you. Grant:  Magic Jack is well worth what you pay for it. It helps to have a faster computer. I upgraded to a dual core windows 7 desktop several months ago and magic jack is much more reliable now. You can pay for a new desktop in a few months compared to the toll charges from a traditional carrier. There are several issues with Magic Jack; I have a niece in Kansas who lives in a very small town; she had to select an area code hundreds of miles away. However, she can still make calls on the magic jack to local or anywhere. Her hubby also has a Magic Jack in Iraq, and it works well for him. We also have missionary friends in Guatamala who use it down there and it keeps them in touch with home. The service with Magic Jack is I suspect a problem; however, you can get lousy service too from the big carriers. It is well worth what you pay for it. Just don't expect it to be perfect. Also, I concur with other commenters who caution you not to depend on it for 911 or for your only phone. Your computer must be working for it to work. That means during a power outage or a network problem it can't be used. Most of the time it works well.

Now every time someone calls my number and I can't answer, the caller is subjected to an AD trying to sell the caller a Magic Jack. Now I only call OUT using the Magic Jack and don't give my number to anyone because callers should not have to here a sales pitch before they leave a message. If they don't stop that I won't renew for another year. No real Customer Service is also a Problem...

Quality is good, caller ID, call forward all the features I never use anyway. $20 for a year to extend, or $70 for 5 years. I am going for a year cause in 2012 it's the end anyway. When you buy MJ for $40 , the 1st year is free and included, just pick you area code and call away. Long live Russia!

I asked for a replacement unit to see if that would fix the problem, and i eventually was told that I would have to pay for iT! Al:  This has been an amusing read. I've had MJ for 3+ years. I like being able to use a wireless phone with it. It is plugged into a computer with a hard-wired ethernet connnection; I'd avoid WiFi for this purpose. It has worked just as advertised so long as both my computer and my internet functioned properly. When my motherboard was going bad, the audio was terrible. When my cable provider had line problems with my internet, so did I. After changing to AT&T, no more problems (with MJ; don't get me started on other issues!). I use it to call my brother on his land line in the small town of Sackville, way up in northern New Brunswick Canada. Perfect quality. Clearly, their customer service sucks. I hate to say it folks, but I don't recall EVER having a good customer service experience with any company based in Florida. Must be something in the water. Congrats to the lady above who had a good experience! And, for those who think the good comments are "salted", I say get a life outside the cynic zone...and get yourself a good internet connection. Clearly they have serious customer service problems, and maybe they do some have billing issues, and perhaps there's even some quality consistency issues with the plug-in (tho I find it hard to believe it is frequent--you probably shouldn't drop it in the toilet before plugging it in!) but the product works very well. BTW folks, try writing in multiple paragraphs to make your ramblings a little bit reader-friendly!

Was always usable, quality improved with new computer to near perfect, but recent problem with 3 busy signels followed by silence to some land lines led me to read these postings to see if I was not alone. I am now certain that the problem isn't with MJ. Certain phone companies are blocking MJ originated calls. My guess is they have received legal advice that this is OK and are doing it because they are loosing a fortune's worth of local and especially LD service accounts. To date QUEST appears to be an exception, and I may switch our phone account to them. Meanwhile, frequent callers can still install a MJ at each end and apparently call anyone in the world who has a MJ and a computer. Bob

Ubgood:  I wanted a telephone number for a business and made a mistake to pick up a MagicJack. All is good until the support or billing or customer service is needed. Because they do not have any intelligent support behind that company and that they do not care at all about the client (you). First of all, they do not have a number that you can call. Only a "Chat" room with you know whom... One hour later they are starting to understand the problem after transfering me to a Top 10% (I guess it is a chat supervisor ) but will not be able to fix my problem even 2 hours later. If your MagicJack does brake (as they do, as they overheat) they may send you another one for it. That is if you really, really, insist heavily. The bad news is that the new magicJack will be another number! The other bad news is that if you did pay for 5 years already you then will loose all the years you did not used, as the magicjack License is not transferable from One Number to another. Same for the money you had prepay on this account. Anyway, I had 3 of them, and the tech support will still not recognize that I still should had the right to get my PAID contract back for me to use on any of my telephone #. So bottom line: You get what you pay for! Look at Verizon package phone service, or Vonage, or Skype, but MagicJack is not recommended for quality communication (people cannot hear you well or your voice will be cut off and only few words will be understood) even if you run the new downloaded version. MagicJack is not recommended for Business as you cannot have more then 1 line. I now usee a professional Polycom voice overIP onteh same internet line with no problem. Sad experiences after almost 2 years using MagicJack... I gonna use my MagicJack for Clay Pigeon shooting practice! I do not have the heart to sale them online for you to buy and have a bad experience like me. ;(

This is a great product. I have not had many issues with it, and for the cost - the few issues I may have are easy to overcome. I get landline quality connection and can use my favorite landline phone set for optimal quality. People who call me from the U.S. on the line cannot tell I am half way around the world or if I am right next door to them. I have kept the same number since I bought it and don't have to worry about changing numbers when I travel. IT WORKS! Don't be fooled into thinking it's a scam. If it is, it's not cost me anything! I have saved tons on monthly phone bills, and I cannot imagine how much money I have saved on long distance calls between the Far East and the U.S. Get one MJ and try it out. Hey you said I could call anywhere in the US & Canada - maybe you should have figured out what it costs before you decided on a price, but anyway, that's YOUR problem. Vonage and the others can do it - you are just too cheap! What phone company doesn't list a phone number anywhere? What - you don't got $39.95 yet? Look at the Wikipedia entry for magicJack 2.

MJ chaged me twice I just called my bank and thay took care of it infact magic jack gave me 2 credits back by mistake so i am a head of the game. Yes magic jack is not that good you just got to know how to beat them at there evil games. About number porting dont hold your breath thay will never offer number porting its just to get more people to buy magic jacks and stay with them thinking you will beable to port out you land or cell number. MJ keeps saying thay are working on it. Thay are not working on anything. i did report magic jack to the FCC about this and the FCC told me magic jack is in the wrong. I also told them you can not call area code 907 or you can not call some numbers in area code 928. the FCC is going to look in to this. Others should report magic jack to the FCC the more reports the FCC gets about magic jack the better. then maybe magic jack will get there act to gether and stop scamming people and telling lies about number porting. Be like me if you have problems with magic jack. magic jack tried to rip me off and I beat them at there own evil game. dont take any crap from magic jack fight back like me and magic jack will shape up or ship out.

I will be glad assisting you today. Imarie: As I checked here in our end, your calls are routed properly, your connection is working great. However if you cannot receive calls from certain number, then it is the caller's routing problem and not a magicJack problem. felix: lady they put me on three way and called my number and it stated they have been direct to call a 305 majicjack number to connect with me which doesnt make any sense at all so it is your problem on your end as this hasnt happen before felix: the routing issue is with u Imarie: Please be informed that it does not happen to all Customers and other callers can call directly, so basically it is a routing issue of the callers phone provider. felix: i have several cell phone users that have called me in the past several days with differet carriers and you telling me that all of the cell phone carriers that have called me are having problems in the world right?? then you are full of it!!! felix: or you dont know what you are doing either felix: and majicjack is a scam Imarie: We are definitely confident that it is not our issue. We have received a lot of complain for the past few days and our System Engineers checked our routing system and confirmed that it is not our issue. Imarie: It is the cellphone provider and NOT OUR ISSUE. felix: i just hung up with the gentleman that just trying to call me and he put me on threeway to hear for myself what is going on with the call to my phone and you are tellin me that: verizon, cinci bell, sprint, att, t mobile are the problem right?? and not majicjack?? felix: so basically you are now telling me that no one call me from a cell phone now Imarie: Yes, it is not our issue. Imarie: They need first to contact their cellphone provider and route the calls properly. felix: have you told the millions of people that have purchased majicjack that they cannot recieve any phone calls from cell phones?? felix: Does the BBB know about this?? Imarie: Please be informed Felix that others don't have any problems receiving calls from cellphone provider. Imarie: You may tell them if you want Felix. felix: so why am i having this problem ???!!! Imarie: As I have said, your cellphone callers need to ask their cellphone provider to re-route their calls properly. Imarie: Your number is being identified as a local number when it is a long distance number If you are getting a message stating "Your number is being identified as a local number when it is a long distance number", you need to call your long distance carrier and tell them to route your call properly. For you convenience, we have provided some common long distance carriers' phone numbers below: Sprint 866-866-7509 866-866-7509 MetroPCS 888-863-8768 888-863-8768 AT&T 800-331-0500 800-331-0500 T-Mobile 877-878-7326 877-878-7326 Verizon 718-890-1800 718-890-1800 Sprint 800-639-6111 800-639-6111 Cricket 800-274-2538 800-274-2538 Optimum Lightpath 866-611-3434 866-611-3434 Comcast 800-266-2278 800-266-2278 Verizon 800-837-4966 800-837-4966 Bell Mobility 800-667-0123 800-667-0123 Comcast 888-266-2278 888-266-2278 For all other providers please check your monthly statement for their contact information. felix: and again there are several cell phone carriers that have tried to call me that are having the same problem Imarie: I know this can be frustrating and I would have accommodated your request if it were possible. Please be informed that no problems with landline phone carriers, so it is a cellphone carrier's issue and not our issue. Imarie: Okay. felix: landline??? what does this have to do with landline and not cell phone carriers?? Imarie: The routing problems are not with magicJack but with cellphone lines. felix: so i'm suppose to call all of those carriers and tell them the route the call to me correctly?? Imarie: No. Imarie: Your caller needs to call their phone carrier. felix: so why is when they call me its telling to call majack jack at 3053488288 to get me then?? felix: telling them to call majack jack at that number felix: to connect with me then felix: due to the call being placed from a local carrier felix: you guys have changed something and you are not telling people Imarie: Please be informed that it is NOT OUR ISSUE. felix: i spoke with telephone executive already which stated that Imarie: Our SYSTEM ENGINEERS have checked and confirmed that it is not our issue. felix: i have not had any problems until now and I cant get any calls all of the sudden Imarie: We received complains that's why our ENGINEERS checked our end and CONFIRMED that it is not an issue here in our end. felix: and you are telling me that its not your problems as the resolution to this issue and unbelievable Imarie: Yes, it is not our issue. felix: when im telling you what i just heard with my own hears felix: with the phone executive on the line with me to confirm it felix: all you can say is it is not our issue??? is a big problem for me right now Imarie: I don't want to argue with you Felix, our SYSTEM ENGINEERS have checked and confirmed and it is not our issue since a lot of customers don't have issues in receiving a call. It is the CELLPHONE's provider issue. felix: these have been calling me all of this time until now from different providers and now all of the cellphone carriers that call a majicjack number are routed to a 3053488288 number and all you can say is that it is not your problem is MAJOR felix: these guys that is Imarie: Yes, we do not have routing issue here in our end. felix: so why did you send me those phone numbers again?? felix: i need to call them all right?? to make sure they are routing there calls to me correctly right?? Imarie: NO, that is for the caller's more information and not yours. Imarie: The caller (the person calling your magicJack phone number) needs to ask their phone provider to route their calls PROPERLY. felix: for the caller's more infomation, i'm sorry i dont understand what you are trying to say there please explain Imarie: Especially cellphone providers since you told me that it is the cellphone callers that cannot access your phone number. Imarie: The caller (the person calling your magicJack phone number) needs to ask their phone provider to route their calls PROPERLY. felix: so the caller needs to call their provider to make sure that they are routing their phone calls correctly when calling me on this majic jack phone right?? Imarie: Yes, exactly. Imarie: You got it right. felix: and you are serious about that statment correct?? Imarie: Yes. Imarie: We are 100% sure. felix: you have issues!!!! Imarie: No, it is not our issue. felix: you and the company have issues Imarie: I don't want to argue with you Felix, our SYSTEM ENGINEERS have checked and confirmed and it is not our issue since a lot of customers don't have issues in receiving a call. It is the CELLPHONE's provider issue. felix: that dont make any sense Imarie: I do understand you. Imarie: I have explained everything. felix: so whats change with your system as to I cant recieve any calls from those carriers anymore like I use to ?? Imarie: We did not change anything Felix. Imarie: The caller (the person calling your magicJack phone number) needs to ask their phone provider to route their calls PROPERLY. felix: all you can say to me is its not your issue ?? is not good customer service felix: and have them call their providers when i Imarie: Felix, please be informed that we have checked every connection under your account and it is not an issue here in our end. felix: have told you that this has not happen ever befor now is not good at all Imarie: Yes I do understand that. Imarie: We did not change anything and it is not an issue here in our end. Imarie: I am repeating my answer already. Imarie: I don't want to argue with you Felix, our SYSTEM ENGINEERS have checked and confirmed and it is not our issue since a lot of customers don't have issues in receiving a call. It is the CELLPHONE's provider issue. Good bye. Since we haven't heard from you, we must release this chat. Please click here should you need further assistance: www.magicJack.com/techchat

Please wait for a site operator to respond. You are now chatting with 'Tammy' Your Issue ID for this chat is LTK43603886559X Tammy: Hello, how may I help you? Chris: sorry 317 area code is what it gave me Tammy: Yes, you can change mj phone number in your my.magicjack.com account. Chris: it say it cost $10 to do so? Tammy: Please be informed that changing/adding mj phone number has a nominal fee of $10. Chris: wow i never told it to give me this number this area code is not even in my prefix and local call will be imposable for anyone to contact to me local with calling long distance. Tammy: Are you the one who register the mj device? Chris: Yes Tammy: We can no longer change the nominal fee as that is the company's policy. Chris: OK will ill just return it I new there was a catch to this, it really does me no good if my mother who lives next door to me have to place a long distance call to call me. This is funny stuff thank you for your time. Tammy:Is there anything further I can help you with. Chris No this will make a great review on the net, thank you and have a great evening. Needless to say I returned it to my local CVS were I purchased it and they pulled them off the shelfs and said that I was the 6th person in 2 days to return it. At the one year mark they shut me down despite paying for 5 years. A call to customer support asked for receipts and other nonsense. I finally convinced them I was good and they added the four years. I use it for voicemail only as it E-mails your voicemails to you. You cannot put up with call quality at all. There is so much static and interference. Magic Jack is a total POS. I will not renew.

Jay in AZ:  MagicJack is Horrible! I got a LEMON, and they have been jerking me around until after the 30-day warranty replacement period! The "Chat" Support's strategy is to NEVER actually help--they Stall, and only after an hour do they upgrade you to "one of their Top 10% techs". They keep promising you and promising with "the Next Fix", only to get past the 30-day warranty, so they can get another $10 for "shipping" fees. They are slow to respond, but very Fast to drop your chat! Among a lot of constant problems, my biggest is Not getting calls through, and/or Fast Busy Signals! It does not work well with either XP nor Vista Operating Systems, and it slow to work every time I turned off or relocated my laptop. They KNOW they have plenty of BUGS!! Certainly NOT what an "11 year old can do it"!! Where is the "Majic Fix Button" that "roger t" mentions?? I am looking at NetTalk and some other VoIP systems. Beaumagi:  I used Magicjack as my primary house phone for about 5 months or so. Until they disconnected me for "violating" the Terms of Service. What was my violation? I asked and had to talk to 6 different representatives to find out. I had to many calls in 1 day is what I was finally told. How many calls is to many? Well section 6 of the ToS (Terms of Service) vaguely says "a customer whose usage is twenty (20) times more than the average magicJack's customer's usage, or a customer who calls more than 50 different telephone numbers per day" There is no possible way one will reach the 50 different numbers in one day because MJ (Magicjack) will flag your account before that happens and shut you down! According to my phone log the most calls I made between my son and i was around 25 give or take a couple. if this is "20 times' the average MJ users call volume then there is a serious problem. because anyone that uses mj as their primary phone may at any time get canceled! Because according to mj the average call volume is between 1 and 2 calls per day. Also they give no warning as the to status of your account. i was sent no email and there was no notice when I signed into mj the last time other then a notice that I needed to renew my subscription. And upon renewing my subscription it took 3 days to process to my bank. Once it was processed I still had no service and again no warning as to the status of my account. I then called mj tech services and had to talk to 6 different reps to find out how I may have violated the ToS. One of the so called “supervisors hung up on me in mid-sentance. Every rep said There was no way that they would refund my second payment! It should not have even been accepted my their system if my account was closed! Yet mj processed the payment on a closed account and the refused to refund the amount! Will I ever use majicjack again? Never! ! ! My suggestion is try Vonage or another reasonable VoIP service, but magicjack? Pffft! ! !

I was calling my father almost everyday, and suddenly, my mj just stopped working, but only when calling his number. I can call everyone but him. I spent hours on the net with customer service, but they finally told me after three weeks that they cannot fix it (it is being blocked from the other end...has charter figured out how to block mj?) and that they will refund my money for my MJ. My mj used to work with my fax machine when i first got it, but it no longer does...for those who were asking about the fax. It was my dedicated fax line for several months, until it just stopped working one day. MJ works great until your isp figures out how to buzz, block, or mess your service up. This is a matter the FCC needs to straighten out because we pay for our internet service, and we should have the right to use it however we wish, without the folks that are trying to sell us their expensive products messing with us. Just my own little conspiracy theory : )

The 2nd majic jack was used for aproximately 10 calls total over 6 months. THEY SUSPENDED BOTH MAJIC JACKS because they said THE FIRST ONE had excessive use and was used 20 times more than the average Majic Jack user. I feel deceived and will share my experience with others in the seminars I teach. CSR said there is nothing they can do and I can never use the service again. So I got stuck with two majic jacks & no service.

It had been working until a few months ago, just too lazy to chat with MJ. Today I found that I cannot call my parents who have a rual telephone co-op for phone service in the same state, Tennessee. After a chat session with MJ I received this msg from Tech Support: We are working on interconnecting with the telecommunications carrier for the telephone numbers you have been unable to reach. The current rates charged by carriers are cost prohibitive. There is a legal requirement for all companies to inter- connect if one carrier requests to do so from the other carrier. We hope we will be successful in doing so. In the meantime we would be happy to offer you a refund of your unused magicjack and related services per pro rata method. It will cost more to send the MJ back than I would receive. I can receive calls from the 2 areas that I cannot call!!! So it goes.

Only negative thing is that your PC must always be running but that's not a big deal for me. I understand that as of November 1, 2010 you will be able to port an existing number over to MJ. I can't wait...

Then their claim of only 19.95 a year is bogus, it's double that when you sign up, plus S&H, whats up with that lie. If you need 911 you will be lucky if magicjunk works to reach them. The idea is great, when it works its great but it should not be dependent on your PC needing to be on. When they figure that out, like Vonage, then it may be a good deal. Until then save your money, they are a couple of years away from getting it right yet.

After many many hours on their chat help, none of three techs could fix the problem. The MJ would ring at the other end but when the person picked up there was no one on the line. Same with an incoming call. I found the instructions and address on their web page to return it. The return address wasn't even correct. UPS had to locate the correct addrees for me when the MJ arrived in Florida. Don't think I will give them a 3rd try.

Jay:  I've had MJ for nearly two years and have been satisfied with it until last Friday evening when I received a Voice Mail. When I tried to return the call (and I've received and returned earlier calls from this party), neither I nor the other party could understand what was happening. The voices were breaking up and sounded like a beeping noise, (a human voice was not discernible). After working with Tech Support for more than 13-½ hours in the past two days and chatting with about 20 representatives, I was informed by the last one that I should try the MJ device on another computer. The only other computer that is available to me has an old operating system and is a half hour away from me. The Tech Rep said the problem was not on their end, and couldn't do any more without a ping test (whatever that is). It will cost me $75 to have my computer tested by a repair shop to see why this problem suddenly began 6 days ago. I believe a better solution, as far as I'm concerned, is to have MJ company send me another device to see if it will work. I would return, to you, the device I've used since I started magicJack, and if the new device does not work, I'd be happy to send it back to you and cancel my subscription. I'm attaching the last two or so hours of my conversation with your Tech Representative. The steps he led me through were the same steps the other CS representatives led me through in the aforementioned 13-½ hours in the past two days. .... I ended my service

Make sure you don't have a Lindsey router you have to reset all the time. Your phone won't work half the time. But that's not Magic Jacks fault. And it could be louder. Maybe I got to get a phone that’s louder? Haven’t figure it out yet No $$$ to buy one. I like it! It’s worth $10.00 a year after the first year of service. Use to pay $50.00 a month for qwest.

I filled out the stuff to renew the subscription. The money was taken from my account, but the actual service did not come back. I went on to their live help, and the person could only say that my order did not show up on their records (even though it showed up on my bank account). The person didn't have any suggestions for solving this and only asked if I needed help ordering. I didn't feel like losing more money than I already had. I'll be looking for a different alternative.

Now numbers I was able to call result in a short 3 ring busy signal, including my own landline number, and then silence. Attempts to contact MJ's help is a waste of time. They could do nothing to remidy the problem. I am able to make long distance calls to frequently called friends and this is the only reason I will keep using MJ. Another recent problem has been my attempts to get MJ to work with Windows 7. So far, it will not work. I have some complaints about MJ if the company bothers to read these comments (which I doubt because I think they don't give a dam_ !). Give the user an option to turn off the nag ware we have to see each time MJ boots up. Allow the user to turn off the softphone icon that cmes up when making a call. it too often comes up over the number I am reading from my computer phone list. John Donut:  BEWARE: There are no local prefix numbers for many cities, you have to check with majic jack to see if your CITY is available. Therefore, you may not get a local calling number and local people you know will have to pay long distance to call you from the next closest number.

Jay:  Use it since the 2007 and it still works. If internet service is slow, will get some problems but it works well. Use it all over the world and it saves lots of money in International calls. IT WORKS.....

Babbles:  I can find nothing negative to say about MagicJack. The day I plugged my MagicJack into my USB port I said goodbye to AT&T and their exorbitant pricing. Plugged the base of my Panasonic cordless phones in and was good to go. I've never had a dropped call or any complaints from callers or call receivers. Can't beat the price. What is it, like under $2.00/mo? I've had it for almost one year and still love it. Why pay some company hundreds and hundreds of dollars when its unnecessary? If you have a fast, decent ISP . . . do it.

Dave:  I bought one MJ at Radio Shack and got a cheap $10 phone for just over $50 after taxes. I admit I've only used it for one week, but so far it seems to be great. I expected poor voice quality but with a high-speed Internet connection it sounds like a regular phone. I really like that it sends a wav file to your email address so you can check your voice mail from email.

lightning:  i tried to renew for 1 yr. plan, could not get past the "error" message, each time. you can only renew if you provide a credit card number to charge the fee to. there is no 800,or888 number to try to talk to customer service. trying ti reach the"live agent" prompt is impossible. it is like standing in line at wal-mart onthe 31st of any month during midnite (food stamp shoppers). this is my first year to renew. looks like they want me to buy another "set-up " for $40.00, rather than renew @$20.00 ouch, i felt a screw.

Heidi Lieberwitz:  I bought a magicJack a few months mainly because my cell phone does not work in my apartment. I also loaded on the Magicfeatures upgrade so I could have a way to block certain calls and record calls sometimes. It is working out real well for me and it saved me a lot of money over installing a landline.

William Sumrall:  Used MagicJack for 7 months and it is great. Sound quality much better than my land line. When 'porting' of land line available, I'll be saying 'so long' to big phone companies and do just fine with MagicJack plus cellphone - also will have an extra $600 in pocket at end of year.
